Willam van der Hagen worked in Ireland from the early 1720s onwards. A prolific artist, he can be identified as the father of the Irish School of landscape painting.

His first recorded painting of Ireland is A View of Drogheda (1718) in County Loth on the East Coast. In 1722, Van Der Hagen painted sets for the Theatre Royal in Dublin. Van Der Hagen’s 1736 A View of Waterford is one of the earliest examples of a detailed depiction of any Irish city. Depicting extensively Irish towns, his 1738 painting of Corke Harbour is one of the oldest surviving representations of the city. A great number of his works are publically exhibited across Ireland.
